What is Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or ‘Zhong Yi’ 中醫, is a complete medical system which originates in ancient China and has evolved for more than 2000 years. The ‘Yi’ 醫 from ‘Zhong Yi’ means medicine, while the ‘Zhong’ 中 is often translated as Zhong Guo’ 中國 (China).
In fact, ‘Zhong’ in this should be taken more literally as center/middle or (in this context) at equilibrium/homeostasis. Equilibrium is defined as: a state of rest or balance due to the equal action of opposing forces (Homeostasis is the equillibrium state specifically for physiological processes).
In TCM, these opposing forces is are called Yin/Yang. When the body is sick, it is a result of imbalance of Yin/Yang, it might be in the state of Yin<Yang or Yin>Yang.
The primary goal of TCM is to help the body to release its potential to heal itself and bring everything into harmony or the state of Yin=Yang. The body already knows what to do on how to fix itself, it just needs a little bit of guidance and support system which we do through acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Another important concept in TCM is holism. TCM believes the body is one organic entity with psychological health strongly related to the physical health (physical being =Yang, mental/emotional = Yin). Holism also refers to the body’s relationship with nature, our health is correlated with what is going on in the external environment (e.g. seasonal change and weather). Therefore, taking care of psycho-emotional health and the great nature into consideration are important aspects of the treatment.
When everything is in harmony, optimum health is obtained.

The goal of Chinese Medicine therapy is to improve flow of blood and oxygen in the body, the health of your blood vessels, your organs and your nervous system by stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself.
By improving the flow of oxygen, nutrients and blood throughout the blood vessel system, every cell in the body is nourished and your healing process will begin. When there is impaired blood flow in the body that area cannot function properly and consequently causes a havoc to the whole system.
Acupuncture's effect can be very quick as it triggers vasodilation and stimulate the nervous system (from skin to the spine and into the brain) Hence sometimes you may feel immediate effect (such as pain relief), it also improves organ function and nerve signals when performed regularly over a course of time.
On the other hand, herbal medicine goes through your digestive system and your blood circulation (because it is ingested). Just like food that you eat, herbs contain various constituents such as vitamins, minerals and active ingredients which has medicinal effect to different parts in your body. A specific herbal formula will be prescribed for you in order to bring the desired therapeutic benefit.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine work synergistically and in most cases both will be recommended in your treatment plan. To make it simple. when your blood flow is improved from acupuncture, the body is able to carry the wonderful active constituents in a smooth and efficient manner (which makes the herbal effect more potent).
